What is Glioblastoma?
An American Association of Neurological Surgeons report states that glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive and fastest-growing type of brain tumor. This type of tumor is typically located in the brain and invades nearby tissues, though it does not typically spread to other organs. A GBM may develop through lower-grade astrocytomas or develop de novo. Adults are primarily affected by it, and the frontal and temporal lobes are the most commonly affected areas.
Left untreated, GBM is a devastating form of brain cancer that often leads to death within six months. In order to improve overall survival rates, it is essential to have immediate access to specialized neuro-oncological and neurosurgical care.
The most common malignant brain and central nervous system tumor, GBM is responsible for approximately 47.7% of all malignancies. An estimated 3.21 people per 100,000 are affected by this disease.
It is important to remember that the symptoms of GBM vary depending on its location, but they may include persistent headaches, blurred or double vision, nausea, weight loss, changes in mood, change in personality, cognitive decline, new onset seizures, and speech problems. Unlike other cancers, glioblastoma has a rapid progression and aggressive nature; therefore, early detection and intervention are crucial for effective management and improved outcomes.
